Sleep Apnea

Restoring Quality Sleep and Health

UNDERSTANDING The Snore

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where your breathing patterns are disrupted throughout the night. It may cause you to stop breathing multiple times, or breathe shallowly during sleep. These brief pauses in breathing can last up to 10 seconds and can occur up to 30 times or more per hour. People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) have an obstruction of their airway that causes these periods of apneas. Symptoms include loud snoring, abrupt awakenings during the night, and excessive daytime fatigue.

At Brookside Sleep Wellness, we understand how important quality sleep is for our patients' overall health and well-being. That's why we're dedicated to helping those who suffer from sleep apnea find the right treatment for them.

Daily Life

The Causes and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Causes of Sleep Apnea

  • Genetics: Studies have shown that people with certain genetic factors are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea.
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts pressure on the airways, making them narrower and increasing the risk of developing sleep apnea.
  • Smoking: Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of sleep apnea due to the inflammation and narrowing of the airways.
  • Alcohol Use: Drinking alcohol can relax the throat muscles, which can lead to sleep apnea.
  • Aging: Sleep apnea is more common in older individuals, as aging causes changes in the body including a decrease in muscle tone.
